Google is coming up with Google Universal Search, designed to incorporate listings from Google's various vertical search engines directly into the main Google search results. The organic search results will be included isearches returned by Google News, Google Maps(Local), Google Video, YouTube.
Yahoo intoduced <div class="robots-nocontent">which tells Yahoo's spider that the content tagged with it is not part of the main content of the page and should be ignored.

Another competitor to PayPal, Google's new online payment system - Google Checkout - is launched. It is currently available only in the US. While Google Checkout charges 20¢ plus 2% of the total transaction. PayPal charges 30¢ plus 2.9% fee. For AdWords advertisers, Google will credit you $10 against your transaction fees for every $1 spent on buying AdWords.

Improved Google Sitemaps capability to notify penalized sites for violating Google's webmaster guidelines. Google emphasizes, however, that they won't be notifying all penalized sites. Notifications will be reserved for those sites that are legitimate, but are using some technique that Google dislikes.

Beginning January 18th, Yahoo is reducing the maximum number of characters viewable within their pay-per-click (PPC) ads. Previously, advertisers had up to 190 characters to work with. Now you'll have to work within a relatively scant 70 characters.
A competitor for the hugely popular Google Maps, Windows Live Local debuted in December with a bunch of cool features, including:
1. A 45-degree bird's-eye view.
2. Integration with MSN Instant Messenger.
3. Customizable, shareable maps with pushpins.
